Developing a “Desktop-like” SaaS Contract Management System for USA Today

With sensitive data they needed a totally secure system that could still be easily configurable

When SaaS Web Apps was approached by the top coaching agency, Premier Stinson Sports, to develop a Sports Contract Management System to be used by their firm in partnership with USA Today and the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette University Law School they knew they would need to find the right solution to that would enable them to create a customizable rich web application that operates like a desktop one. The sports contract management system would be needed for collecting, analyzing and recording college coach and athletic directors' employment contract data and each partner had unique requirements as well as common ones in the usage of the system.

Premier Stinson Sports needed a Sports Contract Management System that would provide them the ability to collaborate with their partners, USA Today and Marquette University Law School, as well as provide them with an advanced analysis and reporting engine to meet their own needs as well as their clients and partners needs.

Given the sensitivity of the data the system needed to be secure and user security and permissions needed to be easily configurable.  The security needed to be role based and allow any user to access specific functionality based on their role or their specific user permissions.

Since the users would be accessing the system from various locations on various operating systems throughout the country it needed to be accessible from any location over the internet and able to run on the mainstream computing platforms.

Performance was key and the application needed to be able perform well both client side and server side without the client side lag that is typical of many AJAX based web solutions.  With the reporting and analytical capabilities that were required, much of the processing needed to be done server side on a dedicated server but the application still needed to maintain the richness and responsiveness of a desktop application.

After evaluation of the available toolsets on the market to build dynamic websites, SaaS Web Apps chose the ASP.Net based Visual WebGui. "Finding the right development platform that would provide our clients with the ease of deployment, scalability and availability that you get with a web application as well as the performance and security of a desktop application that would be able to handle thousands of contracts and many users became a ‘no-brainer' when we discovered Visual WebGui," said Owner Mike Penn.

Due to Visual WebGui the project was completed on time and announced as a huge success as stated by Mike Penn "We were able to quickly build an application with a rich and robust custom user interface that performed like a desktop application. Performance has been nothing short of excellent, handling thousands of contracts with multiple users from around the country using it every day.  With Visual WebGui's Web UI Design tool we were able to easily customize the look and feel of the web application adding our own flair to the already rich out-of-the-box GUI controls."

"Visual WebGui combined with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Reporting Services proved to be very good choices and exceeded ours and our clients expectations at ease of development, scalability, performance and security.  Using this combination of tools allowed us to meet all of the clients' requirements ahead of schedule and most importantly the clients are very pleased with the system." added Penn.
